Berchtesgaden, Germany | Kempinski 5 Star Hotel

November 04, 2016

After having hopelessly fallen in love with the Swiss Alps during our incredible Eurotrip in 2012, visiting the Bavarian Alps during our Eurotrip 2016 was way up on our agenda (you know, kill-yourself-if-we-didn’t-do-it kinda deal!). Some extensive research (and ogling at google images) later, Berchtesgaden, a German town located in the midst of the Bavarian Alps made its way onto our list. This town is about 2 hours drive from Munich and just a few miles away from the Austrian border. And the highlight of our visit here was hands down our stay at this dreamy hotel nestled in the alpine region at an altitude of 1000m!

When the background is so breathtaking, hubby decides its ok to blur the subject in the foreground ;)

The Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden is one of the best hotels we have stayed at, ever! And let me tell you, the pictures do not remotely capture everything that your six senses experience at that altitude from the comfort of your room. The panoramic views of the Watzmann massif mountain, the valleys and the misty clouds (that hover over all around at dawn and dusk) are to die for! On a clear day, you can see as far out as Berchtesgaden town and Salzburger Land. With the fog-laden scenery, miles and miles of greenery, fresh chilly mountain air with its slight drizzle, we never wanted to leave this place…a perfect getaway to unwind and relax!

The hotel is away from the hustle and bustle of the town and yet only 10-15 mins drive away from most attractions in the area - Eagle's Nest, Salt Mines, Haus der Berge, Königssee Lake ferry, Documentation centre museum, Keltenblitz Sommerrodelbahn ski lift and Jennerbahn ski lift. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and helpful - we were greeted with a (oh-so-yummy and refreshing) welcome drink upon our arrival. Julia at the front desk was wonderful (and worth a special mention); her warm and welcoming smile and spot on recommendations added to the lovely experience!

The breakfast buffet spread was exceptional and contained a wide-range of options (with the breathtaking views from the restaurant and the excellent spread, I am not surprised that we spent well over an hour each day at breakfast :)). The two restaurants at the hotel and the bar (live piano music a plus) served delicious food. Even though they had very limited choices for us vegetarians, the available options were so tasty that we did not mind ordering the same dishes when we went back to the restaurant.

The best part about the hotel for us though were the stunning views from our room and the oh-my-god-the-heated-outdoor-pool (who can say no to a heated pool, let alone one that is overlooking a mountain!!!). We were in a Deluxe Mountain View room and woke up each day feeling like we were in an enchanted land! On one of the mornings, we even caught a glimpse of the Watzmann’s summit during sunrise as the clouds were playing peek-a-boo. And being able to enjoy the setting sun and the dramatic colors on a cold (45 F) evening while taking a dip in the perfectly-warm outdoor pool was beyond priceless and gives us goosebumps to this day!

Poor quality iPhone photo does not do justice to how spectacular the sunset was!

All in all we had a warm, cozy and extraordinary experience at the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden and most definitely wish to return someday!!! 5***** for R-E-A-L and a perfect alpine retreat indeed :)

View from our hotel room, golden hour golden hues!

We even saw a rainbow (see below picture) while sipping some coffee in our room :)

That rainbow made our day!!!
