Movenpick 5-Star Hotel | Sri Lanka | The Asia Collective

September 10, 2018

Thanks to Movenpick Hotel Colombo for graciously hosting us.
Written in partnership with the hotel and The Asia Collective. And as always, all opinions in the post are my own.

Exquisite is how I would sum up our time at the first new five-star hotel that has opened in Colombo in 25 years, the luxurious Mövenpick Hotel. With over 80 hotels and resorts across the world that are well known for their class and elegance, you wouldn’t expect anything less from the Movenpick group of hotels and resorts.

You know that this is exactly your kind of place when their motto resonates with you on so many different levels...
“Discover the buzz of city life from Berlin to Bangkok, or chill out on tranquil beaches from Tunisia to Thailand. It’s the collection of experiences – of moments spent in faraway places – that makes life wonderful.”

There’s something about staying right in the middle of a commercial district (in between all the hustle and bustle) during your vacation that is so exciting and thrilling, especially when it offers stunning panoramic views from every part of the hotel! This luxury hotel is centrally located at the heart of Colombo, minutes away from the beach and close to the Liberty shopping center, Colpetty market, National Museum, and several other attractions.

Even before you walk into the hotel you are instantly drawn by the modern design of the hotel building from the outside. And as you walk into the hotel you are even more impressed with the contemporary design, architecture, and decor of the space - right from the lobby area to the corridors you walk by to the rooms to the restaurants to the rooftop bar to the infinity pool, everything looks chic and classy!

With a total of 219 spacious rooms and suites, this 24 storey hotel offers great views of the city/ocean from both the bedroom as well as the bathroom. The rooms are beautifully designed and furnished with a plush king-sized bed, a large couch and an office desk and chair, and my favorite was an exclusive vanity table/chair section (not commonly found in many hotels). The ensuite bathrooms look stylish, especially with the floor-to-ceiling glass windows right by the bathtub/shower (don’t worry, you can pull down the curtain for privacy). I could probably sit in the bathtub of our executive ocean view room looking out the window while sipping on their signature cocktails and watch the day transition from dawn to dusk and not get bored of the view.

Speaking of signature cocktails or dining at the hotel in general, the wide variety of food choices available at the 3 themed restaurants and bars in the hotel are top-notch. Right after we checked into the hotel we went straight to The Robata Grill and Lounge (a Japanese Izakaya restaurant and sushi bar) for lunch and we were extremely pleased with both the service and the delish bento boxes we ordered. Vinay and I have had some not-so-good experiences with Japnese cuisine in the past and we are always wary while trying a new place, but the Robata Grill certainly proved us wrong and we really enjoyed everything on the table. The highlight was the Ebony drink (Cognac, Nutella, Oreo, Butterscotch Ice cream, holy yum!) we instantly fell in love with, so much so that we ordered at least one every time we went to one of the restaurants/ bars in the hotel. The AYU restaurant offers all-day dining and we were blown away by the vast buffet options and spread available at breakfast, from Sri Lankan to Indian to Chinese to western cuisine, including several healthy options.

As if the beautiful views from our hotel room weren’t enough, the hypnotizing views of the shoreline and the ocean from the rooftop lounge called the Vistas Bar, and the infinity pool took our breath away! Surely a place to hang out and chill no matter the time of the day and enjoy different views of the city in daylight, or at night. As the sun goes down the music gets you grooving and sets the right tone so you can have the time of your life. There is also a jacuzzi in case you get cold after all the fun time in the infinity pool but want to keep yourself warm and not leave the rooftop just yet (I mean, could you blame us ;)).

Additionally, the hotel also has a Spa Ceylon, a beauty salon and an ocean-view fitness center, where you can either get pampered or you could choose to burn off those calories from all the delicious food you have been eating all day long hehe.

Did I mention that the hotel staff is warm, welcoming and pay utmost attention to your needs and promptly follows through each of your requests. As they rightfully say, the Movenpick Hotel Colombo is certainly a hotel that brings a touch of altitude and attitude to Colombo's hospitality scene, making it the perfect base from which to explore this capital city.

Given how much fun Vinay and I had at the Mövenpick Hotel in Colombo and just how much we enjoyed our time there we both can’t wait to go about exploring some of their other properties as we gallivant across the world!

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

Kusum
